Hay Castle, and castles in the area (and Powys Castle, or Powis Castle)

Hay Castle

Hay Castle. The keep was built c.1200 by Matilda de Breos ¹, although it has been much repaired since. The mansion attached to it was built for James Boyle of Hereford c.1660.

Hay is of course one of the towns devoted to second-hand book dealers, and a row of bookcases can be seen in the foreground.

*** Extra  notes, by me ***

¹ Matilda de Breos, or Maud,  of the de Braose family.

The castle belonged for a while to the Earls of Stafford, later Dukes of Buckingham -

the last Duke was executed by Henry VIII in 1521, and his estates were confiscated.

As a result, the Castle was owned by the Crown (Queen Elizabeth I)
at the time of Shakespeare's likely visit to this area of Wales.

Powys Castle, or Powis Castle

Powis Castle, originally built c. 1200 as a fortress of the Welsh Princes of Powys. The castle sits on a rock above terraces with beautiful flowers and plants and overlooks a large garden that includes a lake, an orangery and an aviary.
